Luke 9:22-25
22 “The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders
and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third  day
be raised.” 23 And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let
him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever
would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake,
he will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole
world and loses or forfeits himself?

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
1 “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by
them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in
heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised
by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when
you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret
will reward you. 5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites;
for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners,
that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received
their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door
and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret
will reward  you. 16 “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like
the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be
seen by men. Truly, I  say to you, they have received their reward.
17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your
fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and
your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Mark 9:30-37
30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would
not have any one know it; 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying
to them, “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they
will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32
But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him.
33 And they came to Caper’na-um; and when he was in the house he asked
them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they were silent; for
on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. 35
And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, “If any one
would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took
a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms,
he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives
me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
